by Khayyam, Omar

Needham, MA: Rosemary Press, 1916. (iii), 101, (2)ff. From an edition of 75 copies printed for the 129th meeting of the American Oriental Society, this is one of fifteen reserved for the Press. A charming miniature book featuring Khayyam's celebrated couplets on the recto of each page. The edition was privately issued for the American Oriental Society, one of the nation's oldest learned societies and the oldest devoted to a particular scholastic discipline. George W. and Winthrop M. Southworth, proprietors of the Rosemary Press, were members of the Omar Khayyam Club of America, and they issued at least eight small editions of the Rubaiyat between 1916 and 1921 for various clubs and societies. All were specially bound, though only a few had a jewel on the cover. This copy is bound oblong in yellow leather with gilt stamping and cabochon-cut piece of jade inset on the upper cover. A fine copy of a select edition. (Bromer/Edison, p. 60; Bradbury, p. 247). (1 by 2 7/8; 25x71mm).

Description:
(Watertown, MA): Anne and David Bromer, 1977. Kunikata-Cockram, Midori. (24)pp. The text is printed on Japanese paper with ornamentation in green. Wood engravings by Sarah Chamberlain, as her first miniature book commission. This is the first miniature book published by the Bromers. Midori Kunikata-Cockram captures the whimsical nature of the text, which was the first English poem for children intended for sheer amusement. The front and rear boards of her designer binding are covered with parchment, on which the artist has hand-drawn the insects and small animals attending the feast amongst a pattern of vines and flowers in crimson ink. Delicate onlays of black morocco create the silhouette of a vine climbing up the book's burgundy morocco spine. Inside, endpapers printed with oak leaves and cut-out leaves with hand-drawn shading in pastel reference the oak tree in the poem, beneath which the revels were held. Housed in a suede-lined box, the exterior of which is covered with paper hand-tooled in a…

Description:
New York: D. Appleton, 1831. 192 pp. Approximately 2 1/4 x 2 3/4". Blue cloth over boards, paper label on spine, corner bumping with small portion of boards showing through, otherwise in very good + condition. (Bradbury, D. Appleton, 1; Welsh 4865). Daniel Appleton (1785-1849) began publishing in New York in 1831 and his first imprint was this miniature book. There are two editions of this book, both with 1831 on the title page. One edition has numbered pages and "stereotype edition" on the title page. The other edition has unnumbered pages and no mention of "stereotype edition". It is not possible to know which version came first. This edition was 2,000 copies and was very popular as inspirational books had a good market at that time.
