About This Item
New-Bedford: Printed by Direction of the Meeting [by] Abraham Shearman, Jun. Printer, 1809. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Contemporary morocco, rebacked, gilt-stamped lettering in red leather spine label; 8vo (209x125mm); pp. xvi, 156. Original boards scuffed, and lightly chipped at corners. Text block a bit toned, as expected, with some interesting marginalia. The front flyleaf includes an inscription dated 8 Dec 1923, "To Perry Walton from Rabbi [N? R?] Webber (Mrs. B. [D?]"; as well as an ownership signature "George Mitchell," likely a government employee or official, writing in a distinct, handsome cursive, black ink c. 1822. At the end of the entry on burials, he's penned a note referencing meetings held 1706 and 1822, it concludes: "It is the judgment of this meeting, that no person that is out of unity with friends; or under dealing of Friends for any miscarriage, ought to be suffered to sit in meetings of business, nor their collections to be received, but be [desired?] to withdraw from such mieetings, until such time as they give satisfaction for such their miscarriage." A scarce item, with an interesting provenance.
