About This Item

[Washington, D. C., 1868]. Soft Cover. 8vo.; 107 pages, Fort Snelling reservation. December 10, 1868.-- Referred to the Committee on Mililtary Affairs... The seven-thousand-acre property which comprised Fort Snelling, at the junction of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers, was sold in 1857 for $90,000 to the post sutler, Franklin Steele. Steele, who intended to develop a town on the site, paid $30,000. During the Civil War the fort was occupied by Minnesota Volunteer troops. By 1868, Minneapolis to the north and St. Paul to the south had progressed to the point that Steele concluded (p. 10) that "the occasion is passé" for a development on his site. (Had Steele proceeded, we might have had the "Triplet City.") The documents included here date from 1837, when eight of nine petitioners asking the United States to buy land from the Sioux signed with their marks. A fundamental document for the history and establishment of Minneapolis. Disbound, in temporary white paper wrap. Stock#OB236.
