George Harrap & Co. London. nd. [1911]. 293pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait. Title page in red and black. Top edge gilt. Partially unopened, opened edges untrimmed. Grey endpapers. Full grained morocco. Spine in five compartments with gilt boxing and lettering. Raised banding with gilt foliar curlicues. Occasional spotting. Neat pencil signature to fep. A handsome volume.

Pioneering in literary style, a parody of German Idealism. Sartor Resartus can be translated as 'The Tailor Re-tailored'. Diogenes Teufelsdrockh is the fictional author of 'Clothes, their origin and influence'. Clothes which simultaneously reveal and conceal the divine. Diogenes Teufelsdrockh translates as "God born Devil's dung". Influenced by Swift, Geothe and Sterne, Carlyle's Sartor Resartus had a huge influence in turn on American writers such as Emily Dickinson, Thoreau, Melville, Twain and Jorge Luis Borges.
