About This Item

Stanford, California: Stanford University Press, 1984. M4 - A 2nd edition 1984 printing hardcover book in very good condition in very good dust jacket that is mylar protected. Dust jacket has price clipped, some wrinkling and chipping on the edges and corners, dust jacket and book have some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. 10"x7", 1064 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. This revision and expansion of a classic work treats all of the molluscan species recorded from the Panamic province - the tropical and subtropical shores of the Eastern Pacific and the offshore islands as far as the Galápagos. The Panamic mollusks, with their biogeographic affinities principally in the Pliocene of the Atlantic, are rich in number and variety of species. In completing the first major task of malacology for the province - the cataloging, systematizing, and illustrating of most of the molluscan species likely to be recorded from the region - the work lays the groundwork for the studies of evolution, physiology, behavior, ecological relationships, etc., now being undertaken in earnest. For this edition, the coverage has been extended geographically to northwestern Peru, and systematically to microscopic and deepwater species and to the shell-less mollusks. The text and the supplementary materials have been planned to be of maximum use to interested laymen as well as to specialists. Some 3,325 species are treated, about double the number in the first edition. For the great majority of these (some of the microscopic and deepwater forms are simple listed), the book provides nomenclatural data, synonyms, detailed descriptions, typical dimensions, range data, notes on relationships, etc., and one or more halftone or line illustrations. Also included are synopses for all taxonomic groups above species; identifying keys, to the subgenus level; anatomical drawings for some major groups; introduction and systematics; a list of excluded species; glossary; comprehensive bibliography; four coastal maps; a list of place names; source data on illustrations; and an index to all recognized names and synonyms. The book includes some 4,000 halftone and line illustrations, and 22 color plates illustrating 85 species (including 29 nudibranchs and other opisthobranchs). . 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
