This is the very scarce suppressed first edition, withdrawn from distribution after copyright issues arose concerning some of the still-living poets included in this volume. Leather to spine is rubbed and chipped, edges and corners of boards rubbed, hinges and gutters tender but holding well, signatures tight, clean and unmarked but for occasional light pencil tickmarks in margins of a few sections. Light foxing to endpapers and blanks and scattered marginally throughout text. Portraits wanting. Printed by J. Whiting, Lombard Street. Paper watermarked 1817, 1820. Contents: Poets from Chaucer to the Present Time. Hazlitt's Preface is followed by A Critical List of Authors Contained in this Volume [this includes short critiques for each poet, living and dead].
