London: H. R. Young & T. H. Whitely, 1819. Volume I and II published 1819, III and IV, 1820. Collated, xii, 171, vi, 235, iv, 260, iv, 292, lacking the plate for William Carstairs in Vol. I at p.87 and William Ellis at p.94. In handsome Regency period bindings of black morocco, the covers intricately and completely blind tooled with gilt border, the backs stamped in gilt, all edges gilt, plain gray end papers. Very Good, shelf rubs and light rubbing at joints, some offsetting throughout each volume, due to the plates. A total of 155 of the 157 plates called for, there being double plates in Vol. III for John Collington and John Stone at p. 189, and Samuel Goodere and Mahoney & White at p. 250. A marvelous compendium of portraits of some of the famous and notorious Brits who lived between 1688 and 1760. . First Edition. Morocco. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
