About This Item
Tight, square spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Jacket has some moderate edge-wear and areas of light creasing. Beautifully designed book with full-cloth stamped in two colors. Translated by Alex. Matson. Seven Brothers took Kivi 10 years to finish, and by the time of its publication in 1870, the writer's health was failing and he was soon admitted to a Helsinki psychiatric hospital where he was diagnosed with melancholia due to 'injured dignity as a writer'. While the novel was poorly received in its time, a century later it would be celebrated as a masterpiece of realism, and a 1970 stamp celebrated the work by reproducing this edition's anguished jacket image by Akseli Gallen Kallela, best known for his paintings inspired by the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. 348 pp. Fiction.
Synopsis
Seven Brothers is the first and only novel by Aleksis Kivi, the national author of Finland, and it is widely regarded as the first significant novel written in Finnish and by a Finnish-speaking author. Published in 1870, Seven Brothers ended an era dominated by Swedish-speaking authors, most notable of which was J.L.
