About This Item

London: printed for the author, 1760. First Edition . Full-Leather. Good+. Copywell, J. (Pseud. of William Woty, poet and literary editor, 1732-1791). The Shrubs of Parnassus. London: printed for the author and sold b y J. Newberry, 1760. 1st ed. Contemporary calf covers, new spine with 5 raised bands, unlettered. Cover extremities darkened outside and inside; corners bumped and worn. Interersting provenance: bookplate inside front cover with shield and "The Hon^ble Edward Moncton, Sumerford Hall, County of Stafford" printed in green. Montford was of the lineage of the first Viscount Galway. Tipped over the bookplate is a smaller one of H. Bradley Martin, book collector extraordinaire, whose collection made waves in 1989-1990 all over the book world when Sotheby's had it for auction. The last part of the provenance is another bookplate affixed to the ffep, reading: Ex Libris, Percival F. Hinton. Hinton, a noted bibliographer and scholar, apparently acquired this book from the Sotheby's auction. One further note: the book includes a list of Subscribers, among whom are Samuel Johnson, David Garrick and Dr. Smollett. The text contains " poetical essays moral and comic." Overall, Good plus-Very Good minus.
