Original dust jacket in Mylar; edges slightly worn; two small chips to front top edge; good condition. Paper boards with green stamped lettering and border to front; corners bumped; deckled fore and bottom edge of text block; contains some underlining in red ink throughout. Signed by author and inscribed on first free endpaper. Inscription is a bit difficult to decipher but likely reads: "IWW - Promulgator of their ideas".
Ralph Chaplin (1887-1961) was an American labor activist, writer, and artist. He was active in the Industrial Workers of the World, and for a short time was the editor of its publication "Solidarity". Chaplin, along with about a hundred other Wobblies, was jailed under the Espionage Act of 1917 on charges of conspiring to obstruct World War I and hinder the draft via speeches, articles, pamphlets, and organizing campaigns. Chaplin served four years of his twenty-year sentence, during which time he wrote Bars and Shadows.
