About This Item
The story of the Man who strung the Telegraph across Australia, and the Woman who gave her Name to Alice Springs. In 1855 Charles Todd and his new wife set sail for Adelaide. He was the newly appointed Government Astronomer and Superintendent of Telegraphs of the colony of South Australia. By 1865 Todd had an almost obsession of taking 400 men and 40,000 poles through the centre of Australia - he had no idea where the telegraph should go, he knew almost nothing of the conditions to be faced or the logistics involved but the new continent was desperate for a cultural, personal and economic link with the rest of the world and Charles Todd wanted to be the one who provided it. 292 pages with 56 illustrations and 4 maps. Book in very good condition with light tanning.
