FOURTH EDITION 1874 (first published in Leeds in 1863), miniature book, approximately 70 x 57 mm, 2¾ x 2¼ inches, finely engraved title page preceding dated letterpress title page, showing nargileh water pipes, tobacco plants, a smoker and scales weighted on one side by a crown and on the other by a smoking pipe, pages: (6), 107, (5), tiny print within double ruled pale green frame, the final 5 pages blank but still with this frame, bound in the original publisher's dark brown cloth, bevelled edges, patterned gilt frame to upper cover (blind stamped on lower cover), circular gilt border encloses gilt title on upper cover, gilt rules and title to spine, all edges gilt, dark brown endpapers. An anthology of prose and verse on tobacco and smoking and the history of the plant. A touch of rubbing to extremities of binding, a few minute marks to lower cover, upper cover bright, front inner paper hinge cracked, binding sound and firm, a couple of faint fox spots on letterpress title page and on one Contents list page, no inscriptions. A very good copy. The volume is dedicated to "all true smokers of every land and clime". Bondy, Miniature Books, page 141; Welsh, page 100, No.3213.
