About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1933. First edition, first printing, of the author's first book, the present copy in a notably attractive example of the dust jacket. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896-1953) was one of the best American local colorist writers of the first half of the twentieth century. Her "contribution to American literature is her memorable evocation of the harsh, colorful, enchanting cracker realm of north Florida's Big Scrub", clear in the present work which "featured Florida "crackers": poor rural whites of Scottish or English stock, with their own archaic vernacular. Deeply empathetic with them and fascinated by their folkways (moonshining, alligator hunting, making do in the wilderness with minimal resources), she lived not only among the crackers but on occasion with them, gathering rich literary material" (ANB). Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine and front cover in blue, gilt rule to front cover and spine. With dust jacket. An excellent copy.
