About This Item
The Merry Mountaineers. Very Good. 1974. First Edition. Softcover. Stiff card wraps, staple bound. 40 pp. Illustrated by Bil Dwyer. No index. Authentic Ol' Mountain Family Recipes. Compiled and cartooned by Louise and Bil Dwyer a syndicated comic strip artist, watercolorist and author. Inside the front cover "The Author - Artist" by Lewis Green. Introductory comments give a general history of the area and collection of recipes "Most of the Old Recipes in this book were gathered from Mountain women who rarely bothered to write down a recipe. Their mothers taught them about cooking and many recipes were passed down from generations to generation with general instruction to use a "pinch" of this and a "dab" of that." The first section "Breads" starts with corn: Hoe Cake, Ash Cake, Corn Pone, Cracklin' Corn Bread, Pan Corn Bread, Cherokee Indian Bean Bread, Hominy Bread, Spoon Bread, Spider Corncake, Mountain Corn Cake, Fermented Corn Bread, Hush Puppies, Corn Meal Biscuits, and then we move to flour. There is a wonderful graphic on greens and how to use them including Lamb's Quarters, Ramps, Sumac Horn and more. Meats include venison, muskrat, rabbit, duck, crawfish and Roast Stuffed Coon. Pickling is all the thing now adays, here are recipes for Gooseberry Catsup, Ol' Timey Pickled Cherries and Mustard Pickle. A wonderful collection of America's culinary history. ; 40 pages .
