Octavo, original cloth , illustrated with tissue-guarded engraved portraits of each featured General including frontispiece of Robert E. Lee. In near fine condition. English-born writer and explorer William Parker Snow's most successful book, Southern Generals, Who They Are, and What They Have Done was first published in 1865 and reprinted in at least two revised editions with slightly varying titles including Southern Generals, Their Lives and Campaigns (1866) and Lee and his Generals. The work includes biographies of Robert Edmund Lee, Thomas J. Jackson, P.G.T. Beauregard, Samuel Cooper, James Longstreet, Braxton Bragg, and Wade Hampton among many others.

The author has presented what he believed were the most prominent Generals because including all of them would fill an encyclopedia. . Here he presents us with biographies of 18 Generals. A very good copy bound in publisher's brown embossed cloth, rebacked with original spine laid down, endpapers re-newed, p. 402-403 have off-setting from a leaf laid in at some point. [Howes-743].
