About This Item
1896. CRANE, Stephen. A Souvenir and a Medley: Seven Poems and a Sketch. By Stephen Crane. With Divers and Sundry Communications from Certain Eminent Wits. Original pictorial wrappers, housed in custom brown morocco backed cloth slipcase with inner cloth chemise. East Aurora, NY: The Roycroft Printing Shop, 1896. First edition. BAL 4074. Williams & Starrett 5. Elbert Hubbard arranged a Society of Philistines dinner in Crane's honor in December 1895. "Crane was still very young, very poor, and very much in need of encouragement. Enthusiastic reviews were rare; critics were cautious. He was almost pathetically flattered-and somewhat frightened-by the prospect of such recognition"-Joan H. Baum, Stephen Crane (1871-1900): An Exhibition of His Writings (1956), p.26. This souvenir was published six months after the fact. Besides the poems, a prose sketch "A Great Mistake," and "A Prologue," it contains tributes by friends and from newspapers. Issued as the first number, May 1896, of the Roycroft Quarterly. A near fine copy.
