The World Chess Championship 1972 was a match for the World Chess Championship between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The match took place in the Laugardalshöll arena in Reykjavik, Iceland, and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first American born in the United States to win the world title, and the second American overall (Wilhelm Steinitz, the first world champion, became a naturalized American citizen in 1888). Fischer's win also ended, for a short time, 24 years of Soviet domination of the World Championship. The first game was played on July 11, 1972. The last game (the 21st) began on August 31, was adjourned after 40 moves, and Spassky resigned the next day without resuming play. Fischer won the match 12 1/2 - 8 1/2, becoming the eleventh undisputed World Champion.

Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament, draws were counted as a half point. In the second half, they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds, 8 replay rounds, and 4 game playoff for first at the end, there were 50 rounds all told (!). Like the 4th Congress, this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The 2nd American Chess Congress was held at the Kennard House in Cleveland, 5-15 December 1871. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. The Ohio newspapers have more details, including dates for most of the games.
The players: George Henry Mackenzie led an interesting life away from the chessboard. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. The Danish Chess Championship was organized by the Danish Chess Union (DSU) and first held in 1910. A masterclass was first introduced in 1915. But it is only from 1922 that the title of Danish chess champion was introduced, this was the first year also players from Copenhagen joined. The Master Class for 1916 was contested by 8 players. It was won b P F Johner with a score of 5 and tied two through 4 by M Marchand, O. von Lowenborg and H Krause. 5th place was claimed by O Sevensson with 3 points. 6th place was a tie between Johs Giersing and G Nyholm. The last place was regulated to E Jacobson with 1 1/2.

Aron Nimzowitsch captured first prize, playing at that time, the hyper-modern openings. He did not lose a game with a score of 8. Tied for second were Friedrich (Fritz) Samisch and Savielly Tartakower with scores of 6. Rudolf Spielmann took 4th with 5 1/2. Ernst Jacobson was 5th with 3 points and Jorgen Muller was 6th with 1 1/2. With the Nimzowitsch win, this gave the hyper-modern school more respect.Condition:Spine ends and corners chipped, edges and spine sunned else a good copy, internally very good.

First edition.Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. In this tournament Miguel Najdorf and Julio Bolbochan tied for first with scores of 12 1/2. E Eliskases and R Sanguinetti shared third and fourth with 11 each. Jacobo Bolbochan captured a lone fifth with 10 points. There were a total of 17 contestants in this tournament.Condition:Light edge wear with some age toning to edges else a very good to fine copy.
