About This Item
xxii+377 pages with charts, tables, figures, plates, maps and appendices. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover with decorative border at heal. First edition. This collection of essays, edited by Stephen Plog, is the third book-length study of Black Mesa (Arizona) to be published by Southern Illinois University. Plog author or coauthored nine of its thirteen chapters, setting the tone for the entire volume. Black Mesa lies in far northeaster Arizona. From its southern face the Hopi mesas just south like fingers pointed towards the Little Colorado River. Southwestern archaeologist, especially those interested in the Kayenta region, will find this volume essential reading. The Black Mesa area is unusually important because it exhibits a well-preserved record of prehistoric occupation which contrasts with development in the Chaco region to the east. Black Mesa offered an altogether more forbidding environment than New Mexico's eastern Anasazi heartland, and, as this volume sol carefully points out, settlements were far smaller and less stable. (Journal of Anthropological Research: Vol. 42, No. 2, Summer, 1986) Condition: Previous owner's name on front end paper else a near fine copy issued without jacket.
