1573 ASTROLOGY 1ed Giuntini Astronomy Horoscope Ptolemy Arabic Cosmography RARE
Francesco Giuntini was a 16th-century Italian astrologer, often considered to be one of the best and most influential astrologers of the 16th-century. He wrote an important defense of astrology which focused heavily on Ptolemy's 'Tetrabiblos' and his own commentary on ancient Arabic cosmography and astrology. While other such astrology treatises exist, this work is of particular value because of the inclusion of numerous birth charts, zodiac, and horoscope readings.

Johann Wilhelm Stucki was a 16th-century Swiss historian and theologian who published an important treatise on the development and history of ancient ceremonies and banquets. 'Antiquitatum Convivialium' was a study on the art of banqueting and ultimately stated that ceremonies of all types were a necessary and significant part of all cultures. This work was so ground-breaking, that it was solely responsible for all other accounts written on the subject. Nicolas Popper states that
"Stucki devoted nearly four hundred folio leaves to the feasts of the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Latins."

Rare first edition on the most important voyage of the North Pacific!
In 1791, Royal Navy officer George Vancouver set out on an expedition to North America's Pacific Northwest, exploring western Canada, Alaska, and parts of Northwest United States. The specifics of this voyage were published at the turn of the century, both in English and French, and is often considered to be the most accurate account of the Pacific Northwest. This 1800 first French edition includes impressive full-page views of Vancouver's discoveries, including an impressive engraving of Mount Rainier. Perhaps Cowan's perspective is the most telling:
"This work is superior to any of its kind, and constitutes the chiefest source of authority of that period."
According to Howes, of all modern expeditions to the Pacific, Vancouver's is one of the most important. In this work Vancouver also describes Alaskan and Canadian natives, nautical and… Read More

Through the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie'
changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade.
One of the aspects that made this work so desirable was the incredible, detailed full-page engravings. In fact, the illustrations themselves were so sought-after that they were of published on their own apart from the encyclopedia.
This volume of 'De Planches', or the plates from Diderot's encyclopedia include some of the following engravings:
·
Forges
o Anvil and anchor forging
·

Beginning in 1847, Brigham Young and the Church of Latter-Day Saints developed a curious, English-like phoneme language. It was originally intended to more accurately sound out the English language than the more traditional Latin letters with hopes of being able to teach immigrants to speak English. This language, which came to be known as Deseret, was never fully embraced by most of America and the books and newspapers printed in Deseret are now extremely rare. The 'Encyclopedia of Mormonism' states:
"Those already literate had little incentive to learn the Deseret Alphabet, while illiterates would have had very little to read. The death of President Young in 1877 marked the end of efforts on its behalf."
Only four books were published in the new Deseret alphabet: The First Deseret Alphabet Reader, The Second Deseret Alphabet Reader, The Book of Mormon, and a Book of Mormon excerpt. This 1868 printing of 'The Deseret… Read More
