Einleitung; Prolog; Anhang; Tagebusheintragungen; Glossar; Bindnachweis; Register Markus Wolf was born in 1923 and was the head of the General Reconnaissance Administriaotn (Hauptverwaltung Aufklarung), the foreign intelligence division of East Germany; s Ministry for State Security. He was the deputy there for 34 years, essentially the period of the Cold War. He was in the role of a journalist when he observed the war crimes trials of the Nazi leaderships. His likeness was a secret, and it was not until 1978 when he was photographed in Sweden by Sapo and identified by a defector. There is a counter claim that the CIA had a picture of him from the war crimes trials period, and made an identification in 1959. When the Berlin Wall was toppled, he sought asylum in Russia but was denied. He faced a variety of legal complications and spent a short time in jail. He died in 2006.
