About This Item
New York: The Viking Press, 1983. First Edition . Cloth-backed Paper-covered Bds. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Lindroth, David [maps]. Near Fine book in About Near Fine jacket. See scans and description. New York: Viking, 1983. The true first edition, originally suppressed by the FBI and recalled by the publisher. Maps by David Lindroth. Octavo, cloth-backed paper covered boards, pictorial dust jacket, 628 pp. Bottom edgewear and creasing to jacket; book has several small spots of smudging on its page edges. Near fine in an About Near Fine jacket (see scans). This is the original 1983 version - recalled by the publisher due to an FBI lawsuit and subsequently suppressed for ten years - of Matthiessen's famous account of the events at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in 1975. A bit less than objective in viewpoint and rhetoric - that was the zeitgeist then, even for many historical accounts - but a seminal work of its type and a gripping, informative presentation of an actual dramatic sequence in American history. See scans. L99
