About This Item

London: Archibald Constable , 1908. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6" . None . The second edition of this collection of personal stories reflective of the author's spirituality. A miscellaneous collection of stories by Arthur Symons, reflective of the author's spirituality. In 'A Prelude to Life,' he details the formative years of his self-educated aesthete and would-be writer, while in 'Esther Kahn' he attempts to pair his own fascination with the stage while representing a woman's consciousness. Each story deals with the life and spiritual crisis of its characters, which are mostly artists and intellectuals. Featuring extracts from the 'Life of Lucy Newcome', which was based on his lover Edith Broadbent ('Muriel.') 'Esther Khan' was also later made into a film of the same title. Dedicated to Thomas Hardy. The second edition of this work. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. A minor loss to the tail of the spine, light soiling to the boards. Previous owner's envelop tipped in to the front pastedown, undated, gift inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1930. Internally, firmly bound. Odd light spotting to the fore edge, affecting only the odd leaf; otherwise, the pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Good
