About This Item
Stolen Life: The Journey of a Cree Woman, Rudy Wiebe and Yvonne Johnson Published by Knopf Canada, 1998. 8vo up to 9½" tall. 444 pages. Green boards with gilt spine titles. In pristine condition; unclipped jacket has sticker residue top right and otherwise fine.
On November 18th, 1992, the novelist Rudy Wiebe received a letter from Yvonne Johnson. Johnson identified herself as a prisoner in Kingston's Prison for Women and a great-great-granddaughter of the legendary Cree leader Big Bear. She wrote because she had read Wiebe's novel The Temptations of Big Bear. "To begin a story, someone in some way must break a particular silence." This sentence opens the first chapter of Stolen Life, a harrowing story of Johnson's life, her experiences of abuse from age two onwards, her experiences serving a 25 year sentence for murder, her search for lost family, and her spiritual journey of healing.
