London: Macmillan & Co Ltd, 1889/1893 Two Volumes in publisher's gilt-stamped and ruled red cloth with gilt cameos to front & rear panels, a.e.g., each with 46 illustrations by Harry Furniss including tissue-guarded frontispieces, Volume one first issue with 3 pages ads in rear, Volume two 1st issue with 5 pages ads in rear ending with facsimile specimen page from Alice's Adventures Underground, boards show light wear with softening to spine ends, quiet soil and fade to spine of Vol 1 with some offsetting to front panel edge and tenderness to hinges but binding firm, some roughness to cloth at spine top & panel edges of Vol 2, foxing to early pages Vol 1 & crease to front endpaper; Volume one was from the collection of noted American writer of the period and friend of Oscar Wilde, Amélie Rives, with her small tasteful bookplate to pastedown and her signature and place/date (Paris, 1891) to half-title and to following page; a nice first issue set with interesting ownership associations; 2 8vos: (xxiii) 400pp illus + 3pp ads; (xxxi) 423pp Illus + 5pp ads. Synopsis

Sylvie and Bruno, first published in 1889, and its 1893 second volume Sylvie and Bruno Concluded form the last novel by Lewis Carroll published during his lifetime. Both volumes were illustrated by Harry Furniss. The novel has two main plots; one set in the real world at the time the book was published, the other in the fantasy world of Fairyland.
