Philadelphia: George Barrie & Son Title page continues: "And Twenty Original Etchings, Five Photogravures and a New Etched Portrait". No date - circa 1890-1900. Burton R. Pollin's "Images of Poe's Works" (p.249, #1191) lists the date as 1895. The title page of this six-volume set states "In Seven Volumes", but there is no evidence found here or elsewhere that there ever was, in fact, a seventh book. This statement is apparently a publisher or printer's error. Pollin's reference calls for only the six volumes. Pollin goes on to state, "These plates, all from the 1884 Quantin French volumes, may have been Harrison's main source for most of his pictures in the 1902 edition and are therefore doubly important." Volume I Tales of Imagination (18 stories) (287 pp.), Volume II Tales of Imagination / Tales of Humor (15 stories) (278 pp.), Volume III Tales of Humor (17 stories) (258 pp.), Volume IV The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (225 pp.), Volume V Miscellaneous Tales (11 stories) (324 pp.), and Volume VI Life and Poems (biographical essay and 57 poems) (xxxviii, 199 pp). Red leather and marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt designs and titles on spine. T.e.g. Rough cut page edges on fore-edge and bottom. Marbled endpapers matching the covers. Illustrators include Chifflat, Wogel, Laurens, and Meaulle. Mild rubbing. Only minor bumping to corners. Some occasional, scattered, minor foxing. Owners inscription dated 1900 on f.e.p. of all volumes. Volume V has a small tear at tail of spine. All bindings tight with no loose pages.Scarce in this edition and format.. Half-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description:
1863 1st ed CIVIL WAR Reign of Terror in Missouri Stars and Bars by Isaac Kelso

'Stars and Bars' is a rare 1863 account of the first two years of the American Civil War. Written by Isaac Kelso, 'Stars and Bars' is a piece of historical fiction giving light to the horrors of the Civil War in Missouri, intending to provide Union civilians an understanding of a Southern perspective. The preface states that
"the Northern people have no adequate conception of the actual state of things at the South, and that there is an apathy at the North, from which patriots need to be awakened".

The story centers on Maggie, a young girl from the Bowery who is driven to unfortunate circumstances by poverty and solitude. Crane, who was 22 years old at the time, financed the book's publication himself, although the original 1893 edition was printed under the pseudonym Johnston Smith. Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
