About This Item

various 0. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. TAPESTRY BOOK COLLECTION PLUS UNPUBLISHED MANUSCRIPT A collection of 81 major titles, plus 14 exhibition catalogs on tapestry, in all its features - historical, technical, artistic and cultural - assembled by an independent student of the form over 30 years. The collection includes all the major works of major tapestry scholars like Cavallo, and covers topics like fibers and weaving, dyes, textiles, general histories, European and South American histories, native American craft, etc. (Complete list below). The collection, assembled by Jean P. McMillen, a retired Connecticut public educator, also includes her unpublished manuscript Tapestry: A Full Circle (copyright retained by the creator). Divided in two parts, part 1, in 6 chapters, discusses terminology, design changes, fiber, dyes, equipment, weaving techniques and an historical overview. Part 2, 12 chapters, with each chapter addressing one century of tapestry manufacturing. The chapters are divided into three sections: Part 2, 12 chapters, deals with one century or tapestry manufacturing in each chapter, divided into three sections: section 1 focuses on design trends of that century; section 2 going country by country, explains the development and decline of manufacturing centers; and, section 3 lists sites where tapestries of that century can be viewed. Explains Mrs. McMillen, "This book was written for an interested layperson, like myself. While on sabbatical in the UK in 1987, I took a course at Christ Church College, at Oxford called the ''English Collection'. As we had to write a paper on some facet of a stately home, I chose tapestries as my topic. I found the subject fascinating. When we returned home, my husband and I continued to study tapestries. We were visiting the Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park, New York, where I tried to identify a weaver's mark on a tapestry. I was sure I could find the information I was seeking, but no book was to be found. Thus began my research which became Tapestry: A Full Circle. BOOKS Ackerman, Phyllis.
