About This Item

Providence: Printed By Providence Press Company, 1881. 8 5/8" x 3 7/8". Stitched wrappers. Xi, 54pp. + several leaves of errata bound in. Good: front wrapper with large areas of loss and a diagonal closed tear extending to just under the word "telephone", upper corner with remnant of old label; most of spine perished and what's left is barely hanging on; rear wrapper lacking; a few small chips to first few leaves not affecting text. Otherwise sound and complete. A fairly early telephone directory. The preliminary pages describe rates, how to use a telephone, the location of public telephones and more. The directory consists of an alphabetized list of subscribers for the Providence, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Bristol, East Greenwich, North Attleboro, Attleboro and Warren exchanges. A few brightly colored erratum leaves list subscribers that were not available when the book went to print in late 1881. Rare: we locate one copy owned by an institution, and possibly two others who don't list which specific PTC directory they hold.
