New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1923. First American Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Good. The first American edition, using UK sheets with title page being a cancel. Cloth backed paper covered boards, title and date "1923" printed in blue onto spine, Chinese characters stamped in gilt onto bottom corner of upper board, 12mo (7-1/2 inches [19 cm] tall), pp. [1]-150, [151], [152 - blank], appendices, index, printed on heavy watermarked paper. Volume with fading to covers and spine, paper edges rubbed through in places, endpapers toned, scattered foxing throughout, original $2 price in pencil to upper corner of ffep, cover gilt still bright. With Knopf's four page Fall, 1923 catalogue loosely laid in, confirming the "$2.00" issue price. The first four chapters offer an in-depth discussion of traditional Chinese poetry etc., before starting into 16 important Chinese poems.
