About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. First American edition. Translated from the Portuguese by Barbara Shelby. Octavo. 380pp. Topstain with splashmarks thus near fine in lightly soiled, very good dust jacket with several tiny nicks and tears and a small creased tear on the cover. Noted scholar, translator, and critic of Latin American literature Donald A. Yates' review copy, with a couple of penciled marginal brackets in the text and a letter from the *Saturday Review* laid in, announcing that the book is on the way. Yates has marked up the letter and made notes on 2/3 of the blank verso. Also laid in is an advance sheet from the publisher as well as three pieces torn from newspapers: two reviews of Amado's work by other critics and a 1975 interview with him in *Publisher's Weekly*. Yates' review was published in the *Saturday Review* on August 28, 1971. A nice association.
