About This Item
Boston: Crosby, Nichols, Lee and Co., 1860 Original cloth, gilt spine, although with much of gilt rubbed away. The author was President of Waterville College, now Colby College, in Maine. In the preface, the author explains that this treatise "has been purposely thrown into the form adapted to the class-room," and is thus a textbook. He states that he has "endeavored to make [himself] acquainted with the views of the best thinkers on the subject, and [did not hesitate] to adopt them when [he] could present no better of [his] own." With lengthy Appendix, "Abstract of the History of Speculative Philosophy." Heavy wear to cover extremities, with corners worn through to boards and tiny chips along spine edges. Boards moderately scuffed. Prior owner "Clara Strong Oct 4th 1870" has made penciled notes, for the most part very neat, to almost all blank endpapers and to first page of Appendix. A few notations here and there to other text margins. Second front blank endpaper semi-detached from signature, but text block otherwise solid and binding tight. Clean.
