(104) pp.; folio; bound in beige, terra cotta and black cockerell boards with red cloth back, spine lettered in gold. Designed by John Dreyfus, and printed at the Cambridge University Press. Illustrated with sixteen plates in color. Book label, 'ex-libris' Bernard Rosenthal' bottom edge front pastedown near hinge. This copy with Prospectus and sample plate (16. William Daniell, Lynmouth on the coast of North Devon, 1814), laid in. Also a printed announcement for members "Owing to a breakdown at the bindery in England, Themes in Aquatint wil be slightly delayed / The Publications Committee." In plain paper jacket which is tanned & soiled with chips and closed tears. "Aquatint, in imitation of water-color drawing, is perhaps the most beautiful form of book illustration." Franklin explores the high and low life of the social world depicted in the illustrations of Rowlandson, Daniell, Gilpin, and others. .
