- Hardcover
London: Hamish Hamilton, 1955. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. In the preface, Thurber describes his garland as A "weedy bouquet" - 28 cartoons, published in London with no American edition. The nicest copy we have seen, almost as new, issued without dustjacket and housed, as issued, in a brown cardboard mailing box with illustrated address label pasted on top lid. Inscribed on the label by Helen Thurber "to Dodie and Merrill from the Thurbers". Inscribed by Thurber himself on the verso of the ffe with the thick black wax pencil he preferred to draw with, "The Prentices Jim Thurber". Dodie and Merrill Prentice were personal friends of the Thurbers and residents of Cornwall Connecticut, where the Thurbers had a country house. The only defect to the package is a small water ring to the label on the box. THE collectible copy. HUMOR ILLUSTRATED NEW YORKER.

Nattali and Bond. London. No Date.,Circa 1850. THREE VOLUMES. Tall 8vo (10.2 x 6.6 inches). Text and plates taken from the Ninth edition. Complete set of this famous trilogy, with 80 fine hand-coloured, full page, aquatint plates, the colouring still strong and bright, by Thomas Rowlandson. Some minor spots of foxing to a few leaves in each volume but generally clean and bright copies in the scarce original publisher's brown cloth bindings, with gilt lettering and decoration on spines. Decorative blind stamped panels on boards. Original yellow coated endpapers. Previous owners bookplates to front paste downe endpapers. Some rubbing to top and tail of spines and fore-edges, and a couple of the hinges with neatly repaired splits (about 1.5 inches) but generally these are very good examples. Slight uniform fading to spines but overall a very attractive set of this classic work with Rowlandson's humourous plates. Uncommon in the publishers original decorative cloth bindings.:

Description:
London: Hamish Hamilton,, 1955. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy from the author to fellow writers Peter de Vries and Katinka Loeser, inscribed on the front free endpaper verso, "To the Katinkas from the Helens", and on the lid of the box, more legibly (probably the hand of his wife), "Katinka and Pete from Jim and Helen". A Thurber Garland - or "weedy bouquet" as Thurber prefers in the Foreword - prints 28 cartoons that had previously appeared in the New Yorker; this was their only book publication. Peter De Vries was a friend and colleague of Thurber's, a prolific writer and satiric wit who had joined the New Yorker on Thurber's insistence. He married Katinka Loeser, also a New Yorker contributor, in October 1943. A highly appealing provenance. Oblong duodecimo. Original pictorial boards printed in black, green and orange, illustrated endpapers. With the original buff card box with white paper label printed in brown to lid and 5'- price sticker to base. Illustrated by the author.…
