About This Item

New York: Oxford University Press, 1955. First Printing . Hard Back. Very Good/Good. 5" x 7 1/2. 75 Pages including appendix comparing the stage version at the Apollo Theatre. Salmon cloth with brown lettering and design. Clean tight book with no marks or stamps. Dust jacket is price clipped and has some edge wear. First produced in London June 1955, this is a brilliant and bitter comedy set in Troy, a city doomed to betrayal and destruction. The story is of Hector, a military man who knows the horror and degradation of war, struggling to preserve peace in the face of jinoistic sentiment and mob hysteria. The autho is one of the greatest modern French dramatists, is beginning to be a familiar name in this country. HIs wit and delicacy of style combined with deep poetic emotion are not easy to render in English, but at last in Christopher Fry the perfect translator has been found.
