About This Item

New York: Random House. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1956). Fireside Theatre BCE. Hardcover. NOISBN . [minor dust-soiling to top edge, otherwise no significant wear to book; jacket moderately browned at spine and edges, tiny irregular closed tear at bottom of front panel, short split at top front foldover]. (3 B&W photographs by Fred Feld) The play that made Andy Griffith a star, in the role of a country hick who's drafted into the peacetime Air Force and inadvertently raises the blood pressure of his platoon sergeant, just by bein' his reg'lar self. Hyman's original novel was first adapted as a live TV production in 1955, followed by a Broadway version later the same year, a film adaptation in 1958, and finally in extremely short-lived TV series in 1964; all incarnations except the last-named starred Griffith (who by 1964 was playing yet another slightly idealized version of himself on "The Andy Griffith Show"). The stage production, documented by the three photographs in this edition, also marked the Broadway debut of Don Knotts (although he's not shown in any of the photos). .
