New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. (Stated on the copyright page). 8vo., 499 pages. On the library table are Kelmscott works, including William Morris's The Glittering Plain and his 1895 translation of Beowulf. All the books are clearly bound in the distinctive Kelmscott full limp vellum tied with silk ribbons. The Wood Beyond the World is open to show a Morris-designed woodcut border and frontispiece. Leaning against the bookcase is a copy of the 1896 edition of Chaucer.

The first novel of Jack Kerouac, using his more unfamiliar original name. A coming of age story, where the protagonist is grieving over the death of his father and gripped with the determination to write the great American novel. Softening and rubbing to the head and to the heel of the backstrip and rubbing to the book corners will. the underlying board is visible to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel. Uneven fading to the front panel and sunning to the backstrip. Foxing to the backstrip and to the textblock edges and to the internal pages, most particularly noticeable to the endpapers.
