Consists of four volumes, and a fifth containing maps, plans, views and coins "Illustrative of the Geography and Antiquities of Ancient Greece".Five volumes. Octavos rebound in modern green library buckram with titles in white. The Fifth Volume is bound in a darker green buckram. All the volumes are bright and tight with no marks, etc. The four volumes are internally clean and bright in tight bindings with no marks to text. Volume I: ix, 504 pages; ix; Volume II: 123 pages; [4]; Volume III: 508 pages, iv; Volume IV: , 483 pages [includes general index]. Volume V: 28 page "On the Maps", followed by 28 engraved foldout and folding maps, and 3 plans for a total of 31 as called for. Maps are good to very good with some of the front margins showing wear and toning as they extend past the protective cover by 1/4 inch. Translated from the French. Written as an historical novel of 4th Century Greece, this profides a wealth of information on the period. Jean-Jacques Barthélemy (1716-1795) was a classical scholar, archaeologist and numismatist. He was elected to the London Royal Society in 1789. Barthelemy wrote technical works on archeology, is known for deciphering the Phoenecian alphabet, but "Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece" made him famous as it was very popular, sparked an interest in Ancient Greece, and was used in schools.
