London: Jonathan Cape, 1948. First edition thus. Hardcover. Very Good. One’s Company and News from Tartary. First edition thus. 8vo, terracotta cloth boards with silver gilt titles on spine. Upper edge red. 603pp illustrated with 2 fold out maps. This covers Fleming’s journey from Soviet Russia through to what was then the Chinese capital of Nanking, on to Peiking (Beijing), Japan and India. Tartary as a geographical area is no longer generally recognised, but covered a vast swath of the Central Asian highlands stretching from Turkey to India, encompassing regions of Turkmenistan, Mongolia, China and Russia. Spine slightly sunned, inner book lovely and clean and in very good condition.
