This delightful book was one of the first volumes that Willy Pogany illustrated for Harrap and was first published in 1908.It is a collection of some of our best-known and most well-loved poetry with poems from R.L.Stevenson, Charles Kingsley, E.Nesbit, Edward Lear, and Lewis Carroll,among many well-known poets.It includes The Walrus and the Carpenter,The Lamplighter,The Butterfly's Ball and The Elf and the Dormouse.Illustrated throughout with Willy Pogany's delightful drawings, this treasury will be as well-loved by children of today as it has been by children over the last seventy-five years (then 1988). Willy Pogany was born in Hungary in 1882.After spending some time in Paris he came to London in 1906.He illustrated many books for Harrap including his most well-known work, 'Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam'.His first book for Harrap though,was this one,which was an immediate success. Up until August 1914 he contributed a major book to the Harrap list every year including 'The Ancient Mariner', 'Tannhauser', 'Lohengrin','Parsiful' and 'Gulliver's Travels'.In 1914 when WWI started he had to leave England because he was not a British citizen and went to New York.In America he continued to illustrate books as well as designing scenery and costumes for the New York Metropolitan Opera and murals for many public buildings.He also spent some time in Hollywood making films and painting portraits of stars.He died in 1956.
