About This Item
Hopkirk's excellent book examines the forcible opening up of the remarkable land of Tibet during the 19th and 20th centuries by an inquisitive outside world. For adventurers of the day, Tibet was the prize destination and Lhasa, its capital situated nearly three miles above sea level, was the grandest trophy of all. Armed with sextants, rifles and gold, and usually in disguise, the tale draws on a remarkable cast of soldiers, mystics, mountaineers and missionaries. Not until 1904 did the gatecrashers break through, before the land became a focal point in the Great Game of politics and history in High Asia.
A clean and tight copy. Pages are clear and bright, with minor foxing at their edges. DJ is clean and has no creases or cuts. It has some sun fading to the spine and a small portion of the back but all in all a really nice copy of a riveting tale. All now protected in professional clear book wrapper. 274 pp with many b&w plates
