About This Item

London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., 1912 First edition, third issue with corrected "Seven" to front board. One of 3500 copies. Publisher's olive-green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front board lettered in black. Very good, with light toning to spine, small dent to right edge of front board, mild soiling to bottom edge of text block, and light thumbsoiling to front endpapers and title page. Overall, an attractive copy. Wise 21. Twixt Land & Sea is a collection of three seafaring short stories by Conrad: "A Smile of Fortune," "Freya of the Seven Seas," and "The Secret Sharer." The last is generally regarded as one of Conrad's best shorter works, second only to Heart of Darkness (1899). It tells the story of a sea captain who hides and protects a stowaway who murdered a man on another ship. The story has strong psychological elements, with the identities of the captain and the stowaway overlapping in surreal and supernatural ways. Just one year after the publication of Twixt Land & Sea, Conrad achieved long-overdue fame and commercial success with his novel, Chance (1913).. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Synopsis

Ever since the sun rose I had been looking ahead. The ship glided gently in smooth water. After a sixty days' passage I was anxious to make my landfall, a fertile and beautiful island of the tropics. The more enthusiastic of its inhabitants delight in describing it as the Pearl of the Ocean. Well, let us call it the Pearl. It's a good name. A pearl distilling much sweetness upon the world.
