About This Item

New York: Greenwood Press, 1968. First Edition. Near Fine. [10.25x7.25in]; xii, 188 pp., frontispiece of Charles Wilkes, four illustrations, appendix, index; Dark brown cloth covers with gilt lettering on spine, all edges trimmed; minimal shelf wear, typical binding excess glue stains along front and back end paper hinges. The United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842, commanded by Charles Wilkes (1798-1877), was the first naval exploring expedition. The main purpose was to chart known and unknown islands in the Pacific Ocean and the west coast of North America. And, along the way, look for the supposed Antarctic continent. Wilkes is best known today for his discovery of 1,500 miles of the Antarctic continent, now called "Wilkes Land". This extensive annotated bibliography cites 533 publications related to the expedition. It also contains a check list of the NY Public Library holdings, text of the legislation relating to the expedition and it's publications.
