About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus, 1962. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Near Fine. 8" by 5.5". Not Stated. A lovely first edition copy of Iris Murdoch's sixth novel, 'An Unofficial Rose'. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Iris Murdoch was a popular novelist and philosopher. Her novels primarily touch on themes of good and evil, sexual relationships, morality and the power of the unconscious. This work is packed with irony, pathos, affection, lust, illusion and disillusion. A unique tragi-comedy about the mysteries of love. In publisher's original cloth binding, with original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is very smart, with just some fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Dust wrapper is darkened to the spine but is otherwise very smart and bright. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

The nine characters in this novel are all looking for love; and so closely is the web woven that the actions and passions of each are constantly affecting the others. The irony and pathos of this tangled situation has extended Iris Murdoch's powers to the full, but her mastery of it is complete. Impelled by affection, lust, lost scruple, illusion and disillusion, wanting to be free yet needing to be involved, these characters perform the linked figures of their destiny.
