About This Item

n.p.: n.p., 1930s?. Original work. 16 x 20.5 inches (frame). Original untitled pencil and gouache painting on paper or board, signed in the lower right corner. In very good condition, with no apparent flaws (not examined outside of frame).

William Andrew (Willy) Pogany (1882–1955) was a celebrated Hungarian-American illustrator, contemporary of Edmund Dulac and N.C. Wyeth. He is remembered most for his illustrations of myths and fairy tales (both Western and Eastern): The Rubaiyat, Parsifal, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Gulliver's Travels, the Arabian Nights, and so on.

This figure, possibly a sketch for a magazine cover or a costume design, was acquired by its current owners directly from the artist’s son.

Passages Bookshop stocks fine, rare, and unusual books and graphic art, with a concentration on modern and contemporary literature and art (particularly poetry and the avant-garde), artist's books, fine printing, and the book arts. The successor to New York City's Bridge Bookshop (late 1980s), Passages opened in Albuquerque in 1994 and relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 1997. Recently settled into our new location in NW Portland, we are open by appointment or chance. Proprietor: David Abel, info@passagesbookshop.com
