About This Item

Madrid: Antonio Marin, 1735. unbound. Carlos D' Bargas. View. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 9" x 14".

Beautiful depiction of indigenous people of Ecuador. The view features a village scene, with Spaniards and Indians in the foreground. In the background we see a hut and people performing various activities like crossing a bridge of vines, a horse being transported across the river and also people being transported. In the distance we see huts and trees and villages. The view is in good condition with some wear along folds. Tear over left fold, bottom.

This particular plan is from Part One, Volume Two, containing "Libro VI: Descripcion de la Provincia de Quito... - Indice de las materias y cosas notables contenidas en esta primera parte". Illustration by Carlos D' Bargas. Antonio de Ulloa (1716-1795) was a Spanish explorer, author, and politician considered one of the best European scientists of his time. He began his research in South America in concert with the French Academy of Sciences and traveled around the continent for ten years. His Relacion Historia del Viaje a la America Meridional, which he published with Jorge Juan y Sanctilla, provided a detailed geography and natural history of the continent. This map is a lovely example of the work they produced.
