About This Item

London: The Hogarth Press, 1952. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8" by 5.5". Not Stated. A first edition copy of this work on travels through Nyasaland, written by South African writer and explorer Laurens van der Post. In the original pictorial dust wrapper. A fascinating work on travels and exploration in Nyasaland, written by South African writer and explorer, Laurens van der Post. Laurens van der Post (1906-1996) was a prominent twentieth-century writer, explorer, philosopher, and conservationist, and is also known for being the godfather of Prince William. The first edition of this work. Containing three illustrated maps, collated and complete. In the original pictorial dust wrapper. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with some minor shelf wear and fading to the spine. Original unclipped dust wrapper is sunned slightly to the spine and extremities, and has some light edgewear. A few light spots and instances of offsetting to the interior of the wrap. Internally, book is firmly bound. Some light spots to the fore-edge as well as to the first few pages, but otherwise pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good

Synopsis

Laurens van der Post was born in Africa in 1906. Most of his adult life was spent divided between Africa and England. His professions of writer and farmer were interrupted by ten years in the army, behind enemy lines in Abyssinia, the Western Desert and the Far East where he was taken prisoner by the Japanese while commanding a small guerrilla unit. He went straight from prison back to active service in Java. He was awarded the CBE for his services in the field.
