Venice: Presso Aldo (Aldine Press), 1585. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Rebound in 19th century red morocco with a stylized Aldine device on the covers, gilt edges. Wear at edges, scattered minor foxing, browning, staining, title trimmed just slightly within the plate. A nice copy of the first Aldine edition of Leroy's curious work of historical philosophy. (32), 327pp
His final work, Leroy had been an unassuming translator of classical works and government functionary. His writing generally sticking to well trod ground before writing this sprawling historio-philosophical work weaving anecdotes and examples from history into a humanist book about the nature of history. First published in French in 1575 as "De la vicissitude ou variete des choses en l'univers". Ahmanson-Murphy 964
