Hugh Lowther, fifth Earl of Lonsdale, was one of the wealthiest and most public members of the British aristocracy. In 1888 he headed for the North American Arctic and Subarctic, encouraged to travel by numerous scandals arising at home from his lifestyle. This handsome book publishes his journals and correspondence of that year and catalogues the amazing and very important collection of native artifacts that he brought home with him. Lonsdale recorded his immediate impressions and observations of the country and the inhabitants he met, including Indians, Eskimos, white traders, and missionaries..

The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
