This is a detailed account, in two volumes, of the early Viking ancestors of the English-speaking peoples, based on a study of the Norse sagas, recent archeological evidence, and the author's research in Scandinavian libraries and museums; the French-American author was a noted explorer and naturalist who led two expeditions to Africa before turning to Northern Europe, wherre five years of travels and research resulted in two books, The Land of the Midnight Sun and The Viking Age;; the two volumes include more than 1300 illustrations taken from antiquities discovered in mounds, cairns, and bogs as well as from the ancient sagas and eddas (maroon cloth with gold lettering and decoration, bright on the front covers, slightly faded on the spines; spine ends are slightly creased, otherwise these are bright, clean, tight, sturdy volumes)
