These beautiful books are the first edition, first issue of "one of the most important works in the history of Antarctic exploration" (Hill). It recounts Sir James Clark Ross's expedition to discover the south magnetic pole, having discovered the north in 1831. He circumnavigated the Antarctic continent, discovered the Ross Sea, Ross Island, the Ross Shelf Ice, Victoria Land, Erebus and Terror Gulf, Mount Erebus, and attempted to penetrate the Weddell Sea. He was knighted on return from this expedition and awarded the gold medal of the Geographical Societies of London and Paris.
The First edtition comprised of just 1500 sets, sold over a number of years, possibly due to public interest waning over the 4 years between the end of the expedition and the publishing of the account. This set is the first issue of the book, with the advertisements at the rear of volume II dated January 1847 as called for. With very few of these first edition sets available for sale, this is a Fine and highly collectible set.
The books have been expertly rebound in half leather green bindings and are housed in a slipcase. The bindings are in excellent, smart condition, with original uncut pages. Inside, other than some toning and the occasional spot due to age, as to be expected in books such as these, the books are in very smart, Fine condition. They are free from damage or marking and show only very mild signs of their age.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
