Philadelphia: Henry B. Ashmead, 1860. 87,[1]pp. plus single-page map. 20th-century three quarter morocco and boards, spine gilt. Joints rubbed, with front board nearly detached. Very clean internally. Very good. The Thomas W. Streeter copy, with his bookplate, and pencil notes on a front fly leaf. This is the first publication of the day-by-day journal kept by Major Long during a journey up and down the Mississippi River in 1817. Long's purpose was to explore the upper reaches of the Mississippi, describe the general topography, and also identify potential military sites.
